Pair of polished cabochons. One flat with half pourus claystone, and half banded opaque agate. The other is an uneven dome with flat back made of claystone with small druzy cave.
 
A rare discovery. This STUNNING Australian Carnelian agate was found by one of our favourite fossickers, Mark, on his private property in cooroy. Mark has expertly cut and polished a selection of these unique carnelians, and this is a limited collection as Mark will not disrupt the ground to find more than what was on the surface (Go Mark! You Rock).
 
From this deposit, This Carnelian Agate has deep translucent oranges, maroons, yellows and clear sections with some white opaque matrix left on the surface.

  • Hardness + Care

    Carnelian Agate has a hardness of 7 and is pretty sturdy, however this is a very unique specimen that deserves a special spot in your home where it can be admired. 

    Carnelian Agate can be cleaned with or submerged in water with no damage to the crystal.

  • Locality + Mining Process

    Nandroya Road Carnelian Agate from Cooroy was long ago exposed by the development of the Railway. It can sometimes be discovered in local rivers and on roadsides, but is very uncommon to find this way. 

    All of my Nandroya Road Agate stock from Cooroy was discovered on the Private property of one of our favourite Fossickers - Mark. This property and deposit is not open to the public. 

  • Crystal Description

     
    Agate is identical to chalcedony in terms of composition and physical properties. They are both Silicon Dioxide crystals with the mineral composition SiO2. 
    Agate can be characterised as a Silicon Dioxide formation that displays patterned concentric banding and wild varieties of colour. When the patterns inside an agate are all straight lines, the stone is called “Onyx”, or when no patterning is visible it is called “Chalcedony” but both contain the same identical mineral composition as Agate.
     
    Agate occurs naturally as amygdales (gas bubbles that are filled) rising to the top of basaltic andesite lava flows. Amounts of silica with accompanying minerals (causing variations in colour and transparency) are despoited into the "Bubble" over time, causing layers of alternating colour. "Thunder Eggs" occur as spherulites (crystals grouping around a point) in rhyolitic lava.
     
    Grade is dependant on the banding, colour, transparency & shape. Agate is often dyed to enhance its colour, however this agates colour is 100% Natural and Untreated.
