Use a torch to check for translucencey. Consider the shape as most agate is rounded to some degree as it occurs as a bubble. Shake the stone and listen for any rattling from inside, this could indicate a Geode! The best way to identify a rough agate is to look for surface marks, irregular fractures and waxiness. The surface of agate is pourous and can appear like tiny craters like a golfball. Remember, Agates found in creeks could be black on the outside from moss that has coated the stone and are not always easy to see!
