Australian Prehnite from the famous Wave Hill mining district in NSW Australia. This piece was hand fossicked, then cut and polished by the fossickers. It shows a good example of the fibrous growth of prehnite in the typical "Lime slice" appearance. 
 
This piece has been free-formed and polished on all sides to show the maximum colour and view of the crystals structure. This piece is a pale green colour with lime green on the edges,  that clearly shows the botryoidal growth of the crystal.

  • Hardness + Care

    Prehnite has a hardness of 6 - 6.5 and fractures unevenly. It is a fairly soft gemstone that can be scratched easily by any harder gemstone. 

    Once polished into a Cabochon for jewellery Prehnite is perfectly hardy to be worn as rings, necklaces, earrings and more.

    In Australia Prehnite is sourced from many deposits across Australia. New South Wales; Localities such as Coonabarabran, The Warrumbungle mountain range, Emu Quarry, Broken hill and Prospect hill; Northern territory in areas such as Wave Hill and Western Australia in deposits in the Kimberly.

    Although Prenite can be sourced around the world it is considered a rare, semi-precious (sometimes precious) and often expensive stone.

  • Crystal Description

    Prehnite is a semi-precious to precious Calcium Aluminum Silicate gemstone with Green colouration found across the world in ancient volcanic locations. It is found in Australia in QLD, NSW, WA and the NT. Prehnite occurs in vesicles (cavitys formed in volcanic rock) and joints in basalt in volcanic plateaus.

    Prehnite forms in bolbus botryoidal aggregate shapes or staletites, and is very rarely seen as crystals. Due to the fibrous growth of the botryoidal shapes, when they are sliced in half they can look like a lime slice. Prehnite is a popular stone for cabachon material, beads and jewellery, and as an ornamental mineral due to its interesting formations.
